EAT: Funny that the pizza I used to eat at 3 a.m. after a night of clubbing is the same pizza I'm serving my two kids. Only now, instead of scarfing down a slice on a South Beach curb, I'm idling at a suburban drive-through.
I'm not complaining. I still get to enjoy Pizza Rustica, the Miami Beach pizzeria with a new spot in South Miami. In an old KFC just off U.S. 1, it offers the same giant rectangles of puffy, French-bread-like crust with 30 topping choices. The 9-by-3 ½-inch slices (we measured) are a full meal, especially if you order a meat-and-vegetable combo.
One of our favorites: The country-style Rustica, with prosciutto, plum tomato sauce, mozzarella, sun-dried tomatoes, artichokes, diced plum tomatoes, Kalamata olives and fresh basil.
Go meatless with an arugula-topped slice (with balsamic vinaigrette, chopped tomatoes, olives, red onions and Asiago cheese) or get good and greasy with the Supreme, which heaps on pepperoni, smoked sausage, red onions, roasted peppers and mozzarella.
Sure, there's pepperoni, but why go traditional when you can get eggplant, roasted chicken, chipotle shrimp, steak or roasted potatoes on your slice?
Whole wheat or white, thick or thin, there are so many choices that newbies should forgo the drive-through and go inside to study the vast display before committing. There are paninis and salads, too.
In case you want to grab a slice after the kiddies are in bed, Pizza Rustica stays open until 2 a.m. most weekdays and 5 a.m. weekends.
DRINK: Counter the mild sweetness of Pizza Rustica's tomato sauce with the bite of a Belgian beer like Chimay.
