SCREEN GEMS

A look at the week ahead in the movies and on TV

BIG SCREEN

Edge of Darkness (R) -- Mel Gibson returns with his first starring role since 2002's Signs, playing a detective investigating the death of his daughter. Ray Winstone took over for Robert DeNiro (who left the project days after shooting began) as a CIA agent who becomes part of the investigation.

When in Rome (PG-13) -- Kristen Bell (TV's Heroes and Veronica Mars) gets her shot at romcom leading lady, playing a New Yorker who steals some coins from a fountain during a visit to Rome and suddenly finds herself pursued by a never-ending chain of Romeos (including Josh Duhamel, Will Arnett and Jon Heder).

Crazy Heart (R) -- Jeff Bridges does his own singing (and is pretty much guaranteed an Oscar) in his portrayal of Bad Blake, an alcoholic, washed-up country singer whose life -- and body -- are crumbling. Maggie Gyllenhaal co-stars as the single mother who might be able to help him right his world.

SMALL SCREEN

Damages (10 p.m. Monday, FX) -- Girl fight! This intense legal drama's third season centers around a three-way fight involving legal shark Patty Hewes (Glenn Close), her bitter ex-protege Ellen Parsons (Rose Byrne) and a secretive clan of Wall Street looters led by Marilyn Tobin (Lily Tomlin).

American Experience (9 p.m. Monday, WPBT-PBS 2) -- The Wild West's most famous lawman shot down the violent Clanton Gang at the O.K. Corral, just the way you've seen it in the movies. But this biography also covers some of Wyatt Earp's less-legendary activities involving saloons, gambling and hookers.

La La Land (11 p.m. Monday, Showtime) -- The Brits love this variation on Candid Camera, with comedian Marc Wootton as three characters who prank London's unwary. Showtime has moved the venue to Los Angeles, where it's about 50-50 whether Wootton's weirdness will go totally unnoticed, or he'll get shot to pieces by an irate street gang.
