Former New York Giants great Lawrence Taylor was arrested Sunday night for leaving the scene of a crash in Miami-Dade, according to jail records.
Taylor, 50, was booked into jail at 9:57 p.m. and released a short time later on $500 bond.
The crash happened about 6:30 p.m. in the northbound lanes of the Palmetto Expressway at Northwest 103rd Street, authorities said.
The crash tore off the front right tire on Taylor's 2009 Cadillac Escalade, and he drove about two miles on the axle before pulling off the road, authorities said.
``There was significant damage to his car,'' said Lt. James Durden of the Florida Highway Patrol.
When police spotted him, he was standing outside the SUV talking on his cellphone.
He told police that he thought he had hit a guardrail.
According to Durden, here's what happened:
A 1984 Ford van was in the right-hand, northbound lane of the Palmetto near Northwest 103rd Street. Taylor was driving next to it.
Taylor might have been trying to change lanes when the right front of his SUV hit the back left of the van.
``Sending the van into a counterclockwise spin in front of the Cadillac,'' Durden said.
Taylor continued on. No one was injured.
Responding officers issued an alert for a ``white vehicle missing the front right tire,'' Durden said.
Officers saw Taylor's SUV off the Palmetto Expressway near Northwest 122nd Street.
Taylor didn't show any signs of impairment and was not given a sobriety test, Durden said.
Taylor was arrested and charged with leaving the scene of a crash. He was also cited for careless driving, Durden said.
The NFL Hall of Famer, who owns a home in Pembroke Pines, also competed on the eighth season of the ABC television show Dancing With The Stars.
