The Everglades National Park is reaching out to a broader audience -- especially a younger generation -- via podcasts.
``We believe this will inspire young people to appreciate this special natural place,'' said Everglades Superintendent Dan Kimball.
The park recently put new podcast videos on its website, www.nps.gov/EVER.
Since late 2008, Everglades National Park began airing the podcasts. The park continues to refine and develop them.
Kicking off their podcast series is ``Royal Palm,'' the first of informational videos intended to acquaint visitors with the park and help them plan a visit.
The podcasts focuses on Everglades' Royal Palm Visitor Center.
The camera angle gives viewers the opportunity to see the park's wildlife. The closed-captioned, high-quality videos can be seen on large or small viewing screens. The podcasts are identified as either informational or interpretive, where the natural history of the area is highlighted. Here rangers share stories about some of the creatures that dwell in the swamps. Funding for the podcast productions was provided through the Centennial Challenge program that grants resources to all national parks for their visitor outreach services. The South Florida National Parks Trust and the park's donation boxes also helped pay for training and video equipment purchases.
The Dry Tortugas National Park also has podcasts.
