Profiles of arrested Broward politicians

Josephus Eggelletion Jr., 60, Broward County commissioner

A former Dillard High School teacher and Lauderdale Lakes city councilman, Eggelletion was elected to the Board of County Commissioners in 2000, serving a year as mayor. Prior to that, he served eight years in the Florida House of Representatives.

Seventeen months into his four-year commissioner's term, members of his core black constituency filed a state ethics complaint, wrote a letter to then-Gov. Jeb Bush and launched a petition drive to rout the controversial commissioner from office.

At that time, he acknowledged charging more than $2,600 in personal expenses he incurred while on county business, including rounds of golf, restaurant meals and dry cleaning.

Eggelletion also came under fire for logging sick leave from his $58,000-a-year school district job promoting diversity while he was in Brazil on county business. Eggelletion blames that matter on a clerical error.

While still under fire for his spending habits with a county credit card, it was disclosed that Eggelletion, while a member of a county agency that oversees trash collection, was paid to lobby Miramar commissioners on behalf of garbage-hauling company Waste Management, which also did business with the county.

At the time, Miramar Commissioner Fitzroy Salesman, who regarded Eggelletion as a mentor, supported the contract, which ultimately was awarded to another company.

In 2007, a magistrate ruled that Eggelletion, then Broward's mayor, didn't have to pay child support for a boy he fathered because the mother originally claimed another man was the father. The mother claimed their relationship began when she was a 16-year-old student at Dillard High School. It was Eggelletion's second paternity suit. He was paying child support for a girl he fathered.

As county commissioner, Eggelletion represents District 9, which includes portions of the cities of Fort Lauderdale, Lauderdale Lakes, Lauderhill, North Lauderdale, Oakland Park, Pompano Beach, Wilton Manors, Sunrise, Tamarac and Plantation.

Prior to entering politics, Eggelletion worked as a barber and a janitor.

Fitzroy Salesman, 52, former Miramar commissioner

On Thanksgiving Eve 2007, Salesman, who was first elected Miramar commissioner in 2001, was arrested after brandishing a gun at a Winn-Dixie during a confrontation with another shopper. It was the latest controversy involving the brash politician.

Salesman said he pulled out the weapon in fear for his life after being confronted by a 19-year-old man during an argument.

Salesman has a permit to carry a concealed weapon, but prosecutors alleged he tried to use his power as a politician and his gun to intimidate the shopper and several of the store employees.

In April, a Broward County jury convicted him of a misdemeanor charge of improperly displaying a firearm but acquitted him of the more serious offense of aggravated assault. He was sentenced to 30 days in jail and a year on probation. He was subsequently released a few weeks later.

A few days after the trial, Salesman lost his bid for reelection.

Salesman also got in trouble with the law in April 2005, when he was arrested and charged with driving under the influence, after a police officer noticed him speeding, then watched him run two stop signs and followed him as he drove on the wrong side of the street.
