My trip to pray for the Cuban soul
Almost 400 years after Juan de Hoyos, Rodrigo de Hoyos and Juan Moreno — the three “Juanes” as they are affectionately called by Cubans — spotted the apparition of a virgin holding a baby Jesus as they rowed their tiny boat in a storm, I was blessed to see the statue in her honor at El Cobre, near an old copper mine at an imposing church on a hill outside Santiago where I made the pilgrimage in 2002.
