Scores of South Florida clinics submitted $2.2 billion in bogus or excessive bills for HIV-infusion services in 2005- 22 times more than the rest of the country combined. The trend continues to this day. The region accounts for less than 10 percent of the nation's HIV/AIDS patients.

About $237 million was billed to Medicare by South Florida medical equipment companies that didn't exist or weren't open for business during unannounced inspections by federal agents in late 2006. In contrast, Los Angeles fared much better.
