The Los Angeles Galaxy earned a 1-0 victory over Chivas USA on Sunday night to take the Western Conference Semifinal Series, 3-2 on aggregate.
A Landon Donovan penalty kick in the 73rd minute proved to be the difference in the game.
The play was made possible by a great combination between Galaxy midfielder David Beckham, Donovan, and attacker Mike Magee. Beckham started the play by finding Donovan on the left side of the Chivas USA penalty area with a looping switch from the right side. Donovan then played a cross through the six-yard box to Magee, who deked around a defender before being taken down, earning the penalty kick call from referee Ricardo Salazar.
Donovan made no mistake on the chance, slotting it past goalkeeper Zach Thornton for the game winner.
Chivas USA has now dropped its fourth consecutive first-round playoff series.
The Galaxy will host the Houston Dynamo, who beat Seattle Sounders FC earlier in the day, in the Western Conference Final next week.
