ROUNDUP

Pine Crest tries to keep run going

abeasley@MiamiHerald.com

In the playoffs, every game is potentially your last.

But for the Pine Crest boys' soccer team, that sense of finality is all the more acute.

The Panthers tangle with rival North Broward Prep on Tuesday in the Region 4-3A semifinals, and for many of their players, it could be their last organized soccer match.

Ever.

Unlike most other elite programs in South Florida, which are loaded with travel players, the vast majority of Pine Crest's roster are only part-timers.

The only time some touch a soccer ball is the four months of the year they are under the supervision of Pine Crest coach Miguel Martin. So it makes the Panthers' run to the semis all the more astounding. In the regional quarters, they knocked off favored University, which was the No. 1 team in last week's South Florida Top 10.

''I think our kids continue to outperform their soccer capabilities,'' said Martin, who has directed Pine Crest to a 17-4-3 season.

''There are no egos, no selfishness at all on this team,'' Martin added. ``The players are fine with their roles. That's what I admire the most.''

Pine Crest beat University 1-0 last Thursday when Matt O'Connor headed home a cross from Zach Wolfson. It was the seventh shutout for Panthers keeper Wyatt Zeller.

And for Wolfson, perhaps Pine Crest's best player, it was a triumphant return from injury. He hurt his leg in the first game of the season, and was only cleared to return to action a few weeks back.

Wolfson still only plays about half of each game. In his absence, players like junior Kyle Burgs (15 goals) and freshman Gio Freitas (11 goals) have emerged.

Pine Crest's surprising victory over University has set up a showdown with North Broward Prep, the Panthers' fiercest rival, for a spot in the regional final.

Pine Crest won at North Broward Prep 3-2 during the season before the Eagles topped the Panthers by the same score in the District 13-3A championship match.

''Just like the University game, we'll be the underdogs,'' Martin said. ``It's a solid rivalry. It always seems to be the two of us at the top of the standings.''
