Northwestern's Teddy Bridgewater might be best athlete of 2011

lblustein@MiamiHerald.com

''I don't see how anyone in the country could be any better than Teddy,'' Clements said. ``Just watch him and you appreciate what a freak of talent he is. This is someone who has speed, great hands, confidence and a knowledge that he is the best. You never find a young guy like this so far ahead of the rest like him. His future is somewhere out in space.''

While nobody is wanting fast-forward past an upcoming senior class that easily rivals the Class of 2008, there are rising juniors in South Florida who are already turning heads. Players like 7-on-7 teammates Jeremy Cash (Ransom Everglades), who will be tremendous over the next two season. There is also quality defensive back Alvin Toomer, who played at Southwest Miami last year.

Away from this 7-on-7 squad, there are also juniors that have made a mark. Players such as Gulliver Prep defensive back/receiver Tacoi Sumler, North Miami Beach quarterback/defensive back Ritchy Desir, running backs Curtric Evans (Chaminade), T.J Marshall (Archbishop McCarthy), Kenny Miller (Killian) and Hialeah standout Jerron Seymour.

Receivers Charles Gaines and Derrick Knowles (Central), Eli Rogers (Northwestern), and offensive linemen Austin Barron and Andrew Reyes (St. Thomas Aquinas), Terrence Carey (Northwestern), Jared Maldonado (Hollywood Hills) and Terrell Price (Booker T. Washington) are also athletes to keep an eye on.

DEFENSIVE STARS

Defensively, Cash, Toomer and Sumler lead the way, but linemen B.J. Dubose (Northeast), Daniel Ford (Stranahan), Bobby Hart and Tanner Motta (Cardinal Gibbons) and God's Power Offer (American) showed they have a chance to be solid.

As do linebackers Brandon Bradley (Columbus), Rakim Carter (Hialeah Miami Lakes), Prince DeJesus and Dwight Jackson (Central), Kenny Hankerson (St. Thomas Aquinas), Wayne Lyons (Dillard), and potential blue chippers Arrington Jenkins of Killian and Denzel Perryman of Coral Gables, who former Cavalier standout Jon Vilma felt would be one of the best to play at the school.

As usual, the defensive secondary is top-fight with Jonas Clark (Booker T. Washington), Thomas Finnie (Central), Jabari Gorman (Monsignor Pace), Nick North (McArthur), Cedric Walker (Gulliver Prep) and impressive Northwestern standout Jermaine Reve, who had a tremendous sophomore season.

There are many more who will emerge this spring and into the summer, and I will bring you those players as well.
