South Florida Express team to showcase best of the area

lblustein@MiamiHerald.com

Sometimes a 7-on-7 event doesn't really get the most out of running backs, and while Brandon Gainer (Central), Jakhari Gore (Columbus) and Hosey Williams (Southridge) are impressive in uniform, it's tough to get a read on their overall ability with just seven players.

''Just seeing all the players out here was impressive,'' Gore said. ``This game is more for the quarterbacks and receivers, but it's still fun.''

The defensive players who came out also were athletes who will certainly end up on some major college roster in over a year. Two of the best big men who continued to make plays all day were Palmetto defensive end/tight end/receiver Delvin Jones, a 6-5, 230-pounder, who transferred from LaSalle, and Dr. Krop linebacker Darius Davis (6-1, 210), who played at Baypoint.

''Jones is a kid we saw early last season,'' Fishbein said. ``By the end of the summer, he will have 50 offers. He's that good and impressive!''

If any team at the USF event hopes to penetrate the secondary of the South Florida Heat, it will have to be very physical. Not only is Joyner a lockdown cover-corner, but with Richard Leonard (Killian), Tony Grimes (Hollywood Hills), University of Florida commitment Demar Dorsey (Boyd Anderson), Khambrel McGee (Northwestern) and Plantation standouts Devin Drane, Michael Anderson and Gilbert St. Louis roaming the field, completing a pass will be tough.

''Speed to burn,'' Goetz said. ``Getting through that defense will be very hard, even for the quality kids we have on this team, and they are all very good.''

In addition, some of the other players who turned heads in the first practice included University of Oregon commitment Ethan Grant (North Broward Prep), who is one of the fastest players in the state, and Gulliver linebacker Ralph Williams, who will have his work cut out for him next season as the leader for the Raiders.

The next practice is slated for Monday, Feb. 16 at 10 a.m. at Central with Gideon Ajagbe (Ransom Everglades), Willis Wright (Miami Springs) and Booker T. standout Eduardo Clements all slated to attend after missing the first event.
