FSU's Fluellen first to be drafted

Miami Herald Writer

Defensive tackle Andre Fluellen, selected by the Detroit Lions with the 24th pick (87th overall) in the third round, was the first Seminole selected.

FSU had no players selected on Day 1 of the draft for the first time since 1987.

Fluellen, last year's defensive captain, was hampered by several minor injuries during a disappointing senior season in which he totaled 21 tackles, but Lions coach Rod Marinelli was impressed with Fluellen on and off the field.

''He's a guy that's a very disruptive player inside,'' Marinelli said.

``. . . When we went [to Florida State] -- and I know a couple of their coaches very well -- they couldn't [say] enough good things about him.''

Defensive tackle Letroy Guion, who decided to forgo his final season of eligibility, was selected by the Minnesota Vikings in the fifth round, 152nd overall.

Linebacker Geno Hayes, who also chose to forgo his final year, was chosen by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the sixth round, 175th overall.
