On doctor's orders, he's a marathon man

Huffing, puffing: At 43 years old I weighed about 250 and had high cholesterol. My doctor told me I was a candidate for a cardiac case. I had some bad habits, working too much, grabbing food at the wrong time -- a lot of fast food, a lot of business meals. I signed up for a trial health program through FPL called Steps for Success. I improved my diet, started walking on a treadmill and progressed to easy running.
Hmmm, a marathon: At the end of 18 months I had dropped my weight to 205 pounds and my body comp was about 27 percent. I received a flyer on the Footworks marathon training program and I decided to give it a shot.
Bring it on: In August 2005 I started training for the Miami Marathon, and I stuck with it even though I had to work countless hours because of the busy, stressful hurricane season. I took it easy and finished in 5:43. In 2007 my oldest daughter trained with me and in addition to completing the ING Miami Marathon we completed the Disney Goofy Challenge, a marathon and a half-marathon in one weekend. My body comp had dropped to 19 percent.
Fat blaster: From January to May 2007 I trained for an Ironman with the triathlon team Fogo do Miami. In May 2007 I competed in the Brazil Ironman. I finished the 2.4-mile swim, 112-mile bike ride and the 26.2-mile run in 13 hours 44 minutes. My training included a total of about 2,000 miles of swimming, biking and running. My weight droped to 192 and my body comp was 15.8 percent.
What's next: I'm training for another Ironman in June on my birthday in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho. I swim twice a week, run twice a week and bike three times a week.
Guilty pleasure: My vice, I'm a heavy coffee drinker. I can have a 16-ounce cup at 10 and go to bed five minutes later. That and a fresh Krispy Kreme doughnut.
