Although Paul Soliai has improved, the Dolphins were disappointed in his play against New England and he hasn't convinced them he's a long-term starter.

CHATTER

Troubling: No team averages fewer yards after the catch than the Dolphins (4.1), and the player who leads them in that category isn't even a receiver (it's running back Ricky Williams with 171). The receiver YAC numbers: Bess (133), Hartline (86), Camarillo (60), Ginn (17, on 19 catches). Consider that while the Dolphins have 605 yards in YAC, five teams top 1,000 (led by Houston at 1,129).

Not only were Dolphins players excited to see Pat White run the option for a few plays Sunday, but ``we thought it should have been put in earlier,'' Ayodele said. Or, as Reggie Torbor said, ``I wondered what took so long.'' . . . Bess has been so upset about drops against the Saints and Jets that he now walks around his home holding a football (in bed, watching TV). ``My wife understands,'' he said. ``It's a reminder to be more sure-handed.''

Although his defense needs work, the Heat has a higher regard for Mario Chalmers than some do. ``I don't know what the kid can do'' to silence critics, owner Micky Arison said. ``He hits the [late game-tying] shot in the national championship game [for Kansas], starts 82 games [as a rookie], works his [butt] off all summer and he's constantly being criticized'' by media. ``We think he has a lot more upside.''

A general manager who spoke to the Marlins at last week's GM meetings said their No. 1 priority is trading Dan Uggla for cheap, young talent. ``There's a decent market for him,'' the GM said, with the Braves, Orioles and Giants among options. Emilio Bonifacio could replace him at second. ``That's his best defensive position but his bat is still a question,'' the GM said.

Sightings: LeBron James and several other Cavaliers cavorting late into the night on South Beach and spending thousands at Mansion after Thursday's Heat game.
