A Washington estate, built when the capital was just a few years old, has gone on the market for $49 million, the city's most expensive listing.

The house is in a gated community and has about 7,500 square feet, with six bedrooms and 6 ½ bathrooms. There's a wet bar, a library, a den, high ceilings and stone and mosaic tile floors. The master bedroom has a fireplace and a loggia. Then there's the pool, spa and arbor. It is being offered for sale partially furnished and decorated. And we suspect neighbors are popping open Champagne bottles...

Cage just listed his 11,817-square-foot Tudor (again) at $29,999,000 -- and has leased a unit in the downtown Biscuit Co. Lofts with an option to buy. He also is believed to own a mansion in Rhode Island, Anne Rice's former house in New Orleans and a castle in Scotland. There may be a place in Hawaii,too, and some more in Los Angeles, but frankly he lost us at $29,999,000.

    Meet Kelsey the flipper. Kelsey Grammer, who lives in Malibu's Serra Retreat, has listed an English Country-style estate in L.A.'s Holmby Hills section for $19.9 million. Grammer and his wife, Camille, have owned the home for about a year and are hoping to flip it for a profit. The purchase price was $13.7 million last summer, according to public records.

    Hedge-fund manager John Paulson made more than $3 billion last year through smart bets, but his Hamptons house has sat on the market since spring and he recently shaved $2.6 million from the price, lowering it to $16.9 million.

    Hot Property: South Florida spotlights selected luxury home sales in Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties. Eugene and Lauren Kravitz have sold a newly constructed, five-bedroom, 6 ½-bathroom waterfront home in Golden Beach to Joe Ackerman and Yael Marcushamer. The property at 456 North Parkway includes approximately 7,000 square feet and was sold for $3,450,000, or $492 per square foot, compared to an initial asking price of $5,995,000.

    With apologies to the rest of the cast, the best reason to tune in to Malcolm in the Middle was always Christopher Masterson's more complex character, Francis -- the brother who got shipped off to military school and then, in the final seasons, ran off to Alaska and wound up marrying a girl just like dear old Mom. What's that they say about humor being consistent with pathos?

    Harbor Beach house sells for $6.45 million

    Hot Property: South Florida spotlights selected luxury home sales in Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties. A six-bedroom, 8 ½-bath, 7,542 square-foot estate in the Harbor Beach subdivision of Fort Lauderdale has been sold for $6,450,000, or $855 per square foot of living area. This compares to a sale price of $1.8 million in March 2004.

    CNN anchor Soledad O'Brien has put her downtown Manhattan loft up for sale for $4.6 million. The former American Morning co-host says she's shopping for a home that's a shorter walk to school for her kids and is larger: ``[I] had no idea I was having twins when we bought the place. Quite a surprise.''

  • Shannen Doherty, who has two Malibu homes, has listed one.

    Although Malibu Colony may have been where everybody knew his name, Cheers star Ted Danson is moving on, having sold his Cape Cod-style house for an undisclosed price, according to area real estate agents. It most recently had been listed at $16.75 million.

    Country-music singer Kenny Rogers, planning to live full time on a ranch he's building, has put his Atlanta mansion on the market for $7.9 million.

    Palm Beach has top deals

    Two of the most expensive deals in U.S. residential real estate have taken place in Palm Beach. John Thornton, chairman of the Washington think tank Brookings Institution, paid $81.5 million to acquire the mansion of movie producer Sidney Kimmel. Thornton, a former president of Goldman Sachs, paid the full asking price, and the house spent less than a month on the market.
