GANAVYA DORAISWAMY

CYPRESS BAY HIGH SCHOOL

After enduring the harsh conditions of her native village in southern India as a child, Ganavya created Project Nemili to bring health screenings, dental services and medical and school supplies to the impoverished village. In addition to collecting donations, she taught classical Indian dance and music to help pay for much of the work.

She also brought inspirational speakers to the village and provided classes on alcohol abuse and sex education. For her efforts, Ganavya was nominated for a Medal of Honor by the government of India.

Ganavya also completed course work for an associate's degree in psychology while attending high school.

SPEECH

LAUREN MARIE BARRIERE

NOVA HIGH SCHOOL

Last year's historic presidential race struck Lauren as an obvious teaching moment. Organizing both a voter registration drive and education program, she managed to pre-register every eligible student in her school.

Lauren is also a champion debater who captains her debate team and has earned superior distinction honors from the National Forensics League.

She was in the top 16 at both the University of Florida's Blue Key Speech and Debate Tournament and the Glenbrooks Speech and Debate Tournament in Illinois.

She was also named an AP Scholar with distinction and a National Hispanic Scholar.

VOCATIONAL-TECHNICAL

JASMINE BROWN

HALLANDALE HIGH SCHOOL

Refusing to accept the stereotypes thrust on her and her friends in her impoverished neighborhood, Jasmine founded a club to empower girls. Through her efforts, girls at her school had a place where they could find positive influences. Eventually, she expanded her program to three neighborhood middle schools and a community center, using members as mentors.

Jasmine also was invited to attend the Presidential Classroom program started by John F. Kennedy in Washington in 1968. In addition, she was awarded a dual enrollment scholarship by Broward College; was vice president of her student government association; and president of her school's Institute of Business and Entrepreneurship.
