EDWARD ANDRE PINO

Remembering his own lonely hospital stay when he was sick with asthma, Edward started a program pairing high school honor students with kids at Joe DiMaggio Children's Hospital.

Recruiting 20 students in the National Honor Society, he organized visits and had students mail the kids drawings, become pen pals or provide tutoring.

Edward also was named an AP Scholar and earned a best footage award in photojournalism from the Florida Scholastic Press Association. He placed first in the Florida Mathematics League statewide competition and performed in school theater productions, and this year was asked to direct.

ARIANA BAURLEY

NORTH BROWARD PREPARATORY SCHOOL

Hoping to spread her love for the violin, Ariana founded Strings of Change, a program to provide violins and lessons to needy children.

After performing at a benefit for abused kids, Ariana was struck by their interest but suspected few could afford a violin or lessons. So she rounded up instruments, and over three years, has taught 20 students.

Ariana was selected for the All-County Honors Gold orchestra, named most valuable musician in her school orchestra, belonged to the Broward Youth Chamber Orchestra and performed at Carnegie Hall with the Florida Youth Orchestra.

She is a National Merit commended scholar and an AP Scholar.

KAYLA O'BRIEN

HOLLYWOOD HILLS HIGH SCHOOL

Inspired by a fellow student whose mother was battling leukemia, Kayla created a project modeled on Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes, the true story of a young Japanese girl sickened by the disease.

Kayla recorded a DVD showing students how to make the cranes, and created an interactive website that allowed them to track their cranes as they made their way to area hospitals and the Sadako Peace Memorial Museum in Hiroshima. She also recorded a video about a girl suffering from leukemia.

A public service announcement Kayla made on homelessness received numerous awards,and she wastelevision club president and captain of her varsity tennis team.

SCIENCE

RENATA DINAMARCO

PEMBROKE PINES CHARTER HIGH SCHOOL

Inspired by her love of science, Renata created a traveling science fair for elementary students, complete with exploding pumpkins, dissected animals and buzzing electrical currents.

As a junior, she created her school's Science Club, whose members visited elementary schools to stage experiments for 460 children.

Renata also started her school's Environmental Club which staged a school-wide recycling day and participated in countywide clean-ups.

Renata was also named an AP Scholar with Distinction, inducted into the National Honor Society and selected an Outstanding Senior Leader by her school.
