At the 51st annual awards show, the look was as important as the music.

Architects are honored

Shulman + Associates, Max Strang Architecture and Zyscovich Architects won multiple awards Saturday for outstanding design.

The American Institute of Architects Miami Chapter gave out 14 awards at its annual gala, chosen from more than 125 entries in the design competition; eight firms received awards for specific projects.

Excellence in Architecture Awards went to Shulman + Associates for the Rubell Family Collection and Residence in Miami; AECOM for Cayman International School; and Max Strang Architecture for the Latterner Residence and the Stein Residence.

Fox, Sharpton top Miami Hurricanes' award list

It was a good night all-around for the University of Miami football program.

At about the same time the Hurricanes learned they would be playing Wisconsin in the Champs Sports Bowl, the Canes had their annual awards banquet at the Gusman Concert Hall on campus.

The Jack Harding Most Valuable Player Award went to two players: left tackle Jason Fox on offense and middle linebacker Darryl Sharpton on defense. Both are seniors.

Bring Latin Grammys back

On Nov. 5, the Latin Grammy Awards were held in Las Vegas. Why is this event held in Las Vegas, rather then in the logical place, Miami?

In 2003, the Latin Grammy Awards were held in Miami Beach and Miami. Then, severe limitations were placed on certain acts' travel to Miami to accept awards. This year, travel restrictions were lifted, and musical groups from throughout the world came to Las Vegas to accept their awards.

This event with 15,000 persons in attendance and approximately 50 satellite events is a $35 million to $50 million boost to a local economy. Televised by Univision, it is viewed by millions of persons throughout the world.

Florida Gators' Tim Tebow a Maxwell Award finalist

Five Florida players were named finalists Monday for national awards.

Quarterback Tim Tebow is in the running for the Maxwell Award (best all-around player) and Davey O'Brien Award (best quarterback), and linebacker Brandon Spikes is up for the Chuck Bednarik Award (best defensive player).

Cornerback Joe Haden, punter Chas Henry and tight end Aaron Hernandez are finalists for awards at their respective positions.
